William Duffy wrote a book a few years ago called Sugar Blues. In the book, he writes about the addictive qualities of white sugar by saying, “It is much like a drug and the difference between sugar addiction and narcotic addiction is largely one of degree.” How is sugar classified as an addictive substance? The fact that you can eat one piece or one bite of something containing sugar, which creates the desire for more and more, qualifies the substance as being addictive. If you give a young child a bite of something containing sugar for the first time, they will cry or scream until you give them more. The other qualification for being addictive is when someone decides to stop eating sugar-containing foods ‘cold turkey’, all kinds of symptoms start appearing like headaches, fuzzy thinking, vacant mind, depression, fatigue, blurred vision and strong cravings, to name a few. These unpleasant withdrawal symptoms try to instigate the person to re-engage the sugar addiction.

Sugar has a long history going back as far as 327BC where records show that raw sugar was used in India. The Spaniards brought sugar to the Americas in the 16th century. About 600 years ago, a refining process was invented. Simple refined sugar is extracted from crushed, ground sugar cane, where it is filtered, then concentrated by boiling it down into a syrup. Over the years substances such as sulfur dioxide, milk of lime, carbon dioxide, charcoal from charred beef bones and calcium carbonate have been used in the refining process as purifying agents. Mmmm, good. Brown sugar is just white sugar with varying degrees of molasses added back. Golden yellow sugar has a little bit of caramel color added. Raw sugar is processed so that a little bit of the molasses remains.

Sugar is classed in the food group called carbohydrates, if you can call this addictive ‘white death’ a food. There are several types of sweet substances, notably, sucrose from sugar cane, fructose from fruit, lactose from milk, and maltose from grain. Combined with other ingredients, sugar, as a carbohydrate is enjoyable to eat and provides the body with instant fuel, unlike proteins and fats which require more complex digestion. Scientific studies on various age groups show that newborns have an instinctive desire for more sweet after tasting it, while children and adults have an acquired taste for it. Once we taste something sweet, we want the pleasure of having more of it.

Scientific studies show that excessive sugar consumption contributes to many health problems that are becoming more and more common, including high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, heart disease, indigestion, hypoglycemia, obesity, gout, fuzzy thinking, myopia, lack of concentration and focus, depression, anxiety, seborrhea and weak bones and teeth. This is because sugar in all its forms causes the body terrain to become extremely acidic. The body functions best at a neutral to alkaline pH, with different parts of the body having different degrees of alkalinity, with the exception of the stomach which is acidic. You can actually buy pH strips from a health food store to test how acid or alkaline your saliva or urine pH is. Your saliva should be approximately 7.4 and your urine should be 6.9 pH. The pH chart is right on the package. You should spit into a clean spoon first thing in the morning before you put anything into your mouth, one hour before a meal, and two hours after you eat. Please do not put the pH paper onto your tongue. The chemicals are toxic and should not be put onto your tongue. They could accumulate over time.

Your urine will test acidic first thing in the morning as it is getting rid of acids flushed throughout the night. You should do your first urine test about two to three hours after you get up but one hour before you eat a meal, not necessarily your first meal.

Sugar is an empty addictive food. It has no minerals, no vitamins, no protein, amino acids, fat or fiber. All it has is calories and that seductive, addictive flavor that makes you want more.

W.D. Ringsdorf, DMD, MS, co-authored a book called Psychodietetics, in which he talks about the dangerous side effects of sugar. Aside from being very addictive, acidic and a major contributor to weight gain, he says that sugar raises the blood pressure. When sugar is combined with animal fats, like in donuts, it leads to clogged arteries and the risk of blood clots. Ringsdorf also says that sugar increases the stickiness of the blood, making it seem thicker and more prone to cause problems with clotting.

Part of your body’s defense system is in the blood. Cells called phagocytes are a type of white blood cell that destroys foreign invaders like bacteria and viruses in the body. Tests show that a couple of teaspoons of sugar, like in a cup of coffee can reduce the ability of these defensive cells to do their job by up to 25 percent. A large helping of pie and ice cream will shut down the phagocytes’ ability to do their job entirely. The pie and ice cream will render your immune system helpless for 4 to 5 hours. Don’t get into a crowded elevator or on a crowded bus during flu season.

Ringsdorf also gives the example of drinking a 683 ml cola beverage which will depress your immune system by 50 percent approximately 30 minutes after you drink it and the effects will last 4 to 5 hours. Imagine all the food items that you eat during the day that contain sugar – the coffee, the tea, the donut or the muffin, the yogurt, salad dressing, orange juice, the energy bar and the chocolate chip cookie. Your immune system will not even be able to kill all the rogue cells that your body produces that have the potential to create lumpy things in your body. You need to stop eating sugar. If you get colds and flu you definitely need to stop eating sugar.

Not only is sugar addictive, it is destroying your health. We were designed to eat food as close to natural as possible. That doesn’t include processed food, of which sugar is one.

After being selected for Jury Duty, you will eventually be asked to sit on a case. That case may or may not be a highly important case, but regardless of its gravity, the same rules will apply to all jurors. No matter how you feel about jury duty, it is important to follow the rules and restrictions set by the Judge on jurors to keep from suffering the consequences.

Those serving Jury duty who are selected for a case may not discuss the case with anyone immediately involved with the trial. Additionally, you are not allowed to discuss the trial with your coworkers or employer, the news media, your family or any of the other jurors (before deliberations). Additionally you are not allowed to speak with the judge in person. If, for some reason a juror needs to speak with the judge, they must do so via written note which will be read before both sides of the case to ensure impartiality.

Most importantly, those serving jury duty who are selected for a case may not read or watch any news reports directly about the case. They may also not talk to any of the other attorneys or witnesses. This is enforced by handing out jury duty patches in the courthouse which designate the jurors as sitting on a case. It keeps others from discussing the case in their presence.

If for some reason, someone feels it is necessary to approach you and discuss a case that you are sitting on as a juror, it is your responsibility to immediately end the conversation and report it to the judge. This ensures that you do not hear anything that you should not and the rules of the courtroom are not breached on your account, creating a mistrial. Anything that might influence what you think of the case is not to hold a conversation with you.

Another awkward rule is that you are disallowed from learning more about the case on your own. You are not allowed to spend any time researching the case or to go to the locations mentioned in the case. Internet use is restricted from anything related to the case, which can at times be hard if you are selected for a higher profile case. Your phone calls are also restricted, to ensure you do not call a friend or colleague for more information about an aspect of the case.

Ultimately, the bans put in place by the judge can be stifling as there are dozens of individuals in the courthouse at any given time whom you are not allowed to converse with or overhear the conversation of. This makes for rather awkward situations at times as you are forced to leave specific areas or request that people stop discussing a case in your presence. The rules are important though, lest all of the time you’ve spent on the jury goes to waste in a mistrial.

I was speaking with a woman about a month ago; she was looking for coverage for her final expenses. When we met she was in her front yard tending her snake, hydrangeas, ferns and spider plants, and as we conversed she told me she transplants at least once per year because she uses fertilizer to help her plants grow.

Widowed with grown children living and working away from home; she owns her small home; mortgage completed, and a small car. Middle-aged and in good health; I discovered that my new acquaintance surprisingly, however, is not unlike many Americans. She does not have a will.

According to a FindLaw.com survey conducted June of 2008; nearly 60 percent of Americans do not have a will. Although more than half of the persons surveyed aged 50 or older had a will, that percentage declined to 25 percent of persons with a will aged 25 to 34. Persons in the survey between the ages of 18 and 24, those with a will is less than ten percent.

Very few of us spend our daily lives thinking about death. Even fewer think about what it is we would like to leave our children, or our loved ones. In talking with people about their final expenses; if they have thought about the cost of a funeral, they have not thought about what happens after they have left us.

A sobering, but necessary thought. I have found that the younger my acquaintance is, the less chance there is that the words “death,” and “will” are in their vocabulary.

So, you if you say you don’t have a will, my immediate question is “why not?” I was told by one person, “Well, I don’t own anything, what do I need a will for?” Well, if you are a home owner, or you are a business owner; a will is not only prudent, but necessary, especially if your financial empire has residual income.

If you die without a will, do you realize what could happen to your car, your clothes, your family photo album? Your business? To pass away without a will, that is to die “intestate,” puts your spouse and/or family in jeopardy of having your state laws determine who gets what.

If you have a will, when is the last time you updated it? Not since the day you wrote it?

Go get it now and let’s have a look.

A will is a basic component of your estate planning. Among other things, it specifies how your assets will be distributed after you pass away, and who will receive them. Without a will, the laws of the state and the decisions of a probate court may determine how your estate is distributed, who will care for your children if they are minors, and so forth.

Your last Will & Testament is one of the most important legal documents in your life. If you don’t have a will because you feel that you don’t own anything, make a list of your bank accounts; investments; real property; personal property, such as your 2010 Buick Lacrosse, or your ’56 Chevy; your rifle collection; fishing and hunting gear and mounts.

Ladies, what about that 14k-gold necklace; diamond-studded ring; a stamp collection; a Singer sewing machine that still works; or that broach you were given by your mother or grandmother? Guys, were you given your grandfather’s diamond-studded retirement watch when you were a child? What about those family photos of your great-grandparents; that baseball card collection that features a Jackie Robinson rookie card; or those savings bonds that have matured and are kept in a safety deposit box?

A will is a legal document that guides and designates when, where, and how your estate is settled and distributed according to your wishes. It can prevent arguments after your death. A will is not required by federal or state law; but if you don’t want your estate to visit probate court you’ll want to complete a legal and valid will, otherwise the state laws will determine who gets what based on family hierarchy, which may not be what you wanted.

As a home and/or business owner this should be done as soon as possible; a will and estate planning now will help spare your loved ones from the additional responsibilities of the distribution of your estate after you have left us; especially when your survivors should not be expected or be able to make some difficult decisions.

There are many options available when drafting a will. It is prudent to consult an attorney who specializes in estate planning to be sure that your will is compliant with current state tax codes and laws. Basic pre-printed and ready to fill-in wills are available; but these type wills are not customizable. Your own properly drafted will gives you the flexibility you need.

If you do have a will, you should review it at least every five years as circumstances and people around you and your life changes. Just as the Policy-owner in your life insurance plan, there may be cause or a need to change beneficiary or beneficiaries. Updates become necessary when there are life changing events: the birth of a child, or grandchild; a marriage; divorce; the acquisition or selling of real estate property or personal property; stocks; bonds; certificates of deposits; IRA’s and 401 K’s; or life insurance policies and annuities you may own, surrender or sell. If you want to give certain gifts or designate certain pieces of property you own; or simply if your overall financial state changes.

These changes require formalities that must be done correctly in order to make your changes valid and applicable under current law. You cannot cross out a word or a phrase and make new notes in handwriting on the margin on the side; this places your will in jeopardy. Minor changes can be made with a Codicil, which is a legal document designed to modify an earlier will. Major changes, however, would require revoking the old will and writing a new one. Neutral, non-beneficiary witnesses are necessary to these major changes as well. Number, sign and date every page of your will. A properly prepared will protects you and your wishes in a Court of Law; the Judge knows that there were no changes made to your will after your death by someone with ulterior motives who wrote in a change by hand, and either added or removed pages in your will.

When will you start preparing your will? Protect your investment; leave a legacy.

Referred to by music industry professionals as an “EPK,” the electronic press kit is the promotional tool bands use to tell a venue booker, festival manager or reporter about the band. It is the band’s equivalent to a job hunter’s resume.

The basic components include biographies of the band members, band photos, samples of the band’s music and band contact information as well as your style of music. Do not say, “Our music speaks for itself” or “Reinventing Rock and Roll” or “Unlike any other band.” You may think that separates you from everyone else. At this point, though, you need to help the recipient place your style of music within their pre-defined categories. If you don’t fit in one of their categories, they have no use for you. It will be more effective for you to say something like, “We’re a metal rock band that blends the beat of x band with the rhythm of y band.”

Other elements of the kit may include press clippings, lyrics, performance experience, performance videos and quotes about the band from well-known music industry people.

There is much debate among music industry “experts” about the EPK. Some say that the most important element is the quality of your music recording. Others say if the EPK looks professional, the recipient will forgive the band for a lesser quality recording of their music.

I would argue that every element of your EPK should be as professional as you can afford. Remember that old adage, “You only get one chance to make a first impression.” Put yourself in the shoes of the recipient. They are receiving EPK’s from bands just starting out to new bands in town to management companies representing bands. Why take a chance on a band that sounds kind of good on a poor-quality recording when you have other bands to select from where there is no question because everything about their EPK is professional?

How do you get the best EPK you can for the least amount of investment? If none of your band members are particularly strong writers, or don’t have particularly good grammar, or you don’t have a girlfriend or sister or mom who writes well, hire a writer. A great resource for finding a writer is your local college. Contact the journalism teacher at the college and ask them to put you in touch with some of their better students for you to interview. Offer to pay the student $50 or $100 to write your entire press kit.

Record your band at the best recording studio you can afford. Do NOT use a recording of a live show. No matter how good you think it sounds it does not sound as good as a studio recording. To keep your costs down, practice, practice, practice before you go into the studio so that you don’t have too many takes before you get a good one. Most recording studios charge on an hourly basis so know how you’re going to spend your time before you walk in the door. Don’t wait until you’re at the studio to decide what order you’re going to record the instruments in. Make sure the producer knows what you want BEFORE you go into the studio so you aren’t coordinating that during your recording time. Even though it’s fun to record, don’t waste time joking around.

Select your best three songs and lay down the tracks as efficiently as you can and include those three songs in your EPK.

Colleges and technical schools are also a great place to tap for recording services. Students are usually required to produce recordings as part of their studies and they need bands to record. This is terrific because it’s usually free or very inexpensive and it’s produced on high quality equipment. You have to proactively approach the school to meet the students and the timing has to coincide with when the students need the bands for their class work.

Your photos should also be professionally shot. And since the photos will also be used on your website, in your marketing, your posters, your CD cover art and in press releases, don’t skimp on your photography. Find a photographer who has experience shooting bands. It’s a special skill that not all photographers have; especially if you want to include a live show shot. If you don’t want to use a live show shot, then a photographer who specializes in family photos will also be a good choice since he/she is used to photographing small groups.

If you’re fortunate enough to have press clippings to include in your EPK, don’t make the mistake most amateurs make. Do not make a copy of the entire story and put it in your kit. Instead, select what you consider to be the best quotes out of each story and create one page with those quotes listed. Following each quote, include the author’s name, the publication name and the date the publication carried the story.

Be sure your contact information is on every element of your EPK. This includes the EPK itself, all photos, the CD, the CD sleeve and a business card. You never know when the elements of the EPK will get separated from each other so it’s imperative that your band name and contact information are on each piece.
