Not everyone likes formal exercise, and it’s not necessary for staying fit, thin, or healthy.

Now there is nothing wrong with formal exercise if you like it. For example my friend Bob has detailed workout plans he keeps on his iPhone. If it’s Wednesday he does this workout and if it’s Friday he does that workout, and everything is entered into his iPhone, and things are graphed in Excel on his PC. His exercise is about as formal as possible, way too much for me, but it works for him.

I have a semi formal exercise plan during the winter only. I regularly go to the gym 2-4 times weekly and I know which muscles I’ll exercise when and throw in some aerobics for good measure, but I never write anything down. And come summer I’m active enough biking and hiking and fishing and chasing my kids around outside that I rarely see the inside of a gym.

Susie does no formal exercise at all but is in great shape! She plays tennis and pickup basketball games and sometimes runs when the mood strikes her. She also plays Wii Fit when she feels like it. She loves being active so it’s no problem, but the idea of formal exercise horrifies her! “It’s supposed to be spontaneous and fun,” she insists.

It’s important to exercise for health among other reasons. If you enjoy formal exercise, great for you, but it’s not required. Simply being regularly physically active, whether you call it exercise or not, is all that’s required.

Too many people believe exercise must be formal, is something that requires special clothes and shoes and memberships and perhaps personal trainers and graphs and charts and statistics. This turns a lot of people off from exercise, often those who could benefit from it the most. Kids do perhaps the most exercise of anyone, as can simply be confirmed by watching kids play or trying to keep up with them for a day. Yet there exercise has traditionally been one hundred percent unstructured and informal.

Historically humans have had no concept of exercise. In most of the world today, the 2nd and 3rd world, there is still no concept of exercise. People simple are active enough in their normal lives chasing wildebeest, working in the fields, and walking during lunch at work, that added “exercise” is not required at all.

Just be active, regardless of whether it’s formal or called “exercise.”
